Just a General Update.

Okay, so I haven’t update my blog in a while, but here we go. So, half-term has just finished, and it’s time to get my proposal ready for our project on Liverpool 1980’s. As you can tell by some of my posts so far, I’m going to base it on the Toxteth Riot’s, and try to explore whether it was important that the Riot’s happen. Our presentation has to be completed on Powerpoint and be ready by next wednesday, so I’m going to get started on that immediately and try to get it out of the way, so I can finish working on some of the other assignments we were given.

Other than that, we have Neil this afternoon, which if it is the same as last time, we will be discussing a current issue in the news as a group (Last time, we discussed Amanda Todd and whether Facebook should be closed because of it.) After that, we have tutorial, and I have no idea what’s going to take place during that time today.

That’s all for today, I think. I’ll be posting again more now that we’re back in College.

Skillbuild: V

Okay, so today with, Craig, we had to go through media legalisation. Our task until next friday is to find two controversial stories to do with Liverpool since the 1950s. I’m probably going to do, to keep it in tone with what I’ve done so far, the Toxteth riots. I haven’t decided on my other story yet, but I’ll figure it out before next friday.

Besides that, I’ve been researching in depth the causes and effects of the Toxteth riots with Tom (?), and we’re still going through Globalisation with Neil. I’m keeping my blog as up to date as I can, but I’m starting to think that I need to do something more productive with my Skillbuild hours; instead of just doing research for Liverpool, I’m considering learning how to use photo-shop more effectively, and possibly learn how to do camera work; I still haven’t decided. Still, we’re finished for today, so my next update will be monday.

Oh, and we have someone new on our course, Tommy. Check out his blog at ‘tommyralstonmedia.wordpress.com.’ I’m helping him catch up on the six weeks he missed.

On to the weekend.

Learning Prezi.

So today, in our morning session, we were introduced to ‘Prezi’, a ‘cloud-based presentation software that opens up a new world between whiteboards and slides.’ Prezi seems to be a ‘more professional’ form of powerpoint, and because of this, I will be using it for my final presentation. However, I did have trouble using it this morning; I haven’t really gotten the hang of what everything does, exactly, but I’m sure I will after a bit more practice. I’ll play around with it this afternoon and see if I can figure it out… hopefully I will.

However, so far, I’ve seen that it’s a useful tool for putting together presentations, even if I can’t quite use it yet. Anyway… I still have to research Liverpool and how Globalisation has affected it, so I’ll carry on with that now.

Skillbuild Hours: IV

So there wasn’t a Skillbuild post on wednesday (You can thank a faulty alarm clock and a driver who insisted on driving through the puddle next to the path for that), so I’ll just post an update now.

So, we’ve been researching different aspects of the Media industry and information about companies within the different fields (See ‘Five Companies’). We’ve also began learning to use Photoshop, which I’ve been avoiding for a while, but its better to learn it now than never I suppose. I’ll post my first attempt at it in a minute; I don’t use ‘first attempt’ lightly.

Right now, we’re having to look up companies within Liverpool, and find out some basic information about them; when was it founded, key people, ECT. I’ll post what I find when I’ve done.

I’m heading back to work.

Skillbuild Hours: The Might Wah!

Okay, so our tutor this morning (I’m having trouble remembering names… Tom, maybe?) told us that this song best captures Liverpool during the 1980’s; I suppose it was too much to hope for thinking it could be anything by the Foo Fighters Mayday Parade… I would have even settled for Take That.

But no, we have ‘Come Back’, by ‘The Mighty Wah!’. Never heard of them? Yeah, me neither. Still, the lyrics in the song apparently best capture Liverpool during the 1980s, which after less then a couple hours of researching, I can already tell was a troubling time by any cities standards; riots, unemployment… I can’t be too specific right now, I’m still reading up about it all myself; there’s a lot to take in.

So, here we go, for future reference: The Might Wah! with Come Back.

Down by the docks the talking turned:
“As some are striving to survive,
the others thrive”
(Reaching the realm of no return)
“I don’t want charity, just half a chance
and it’s all up to you, yes it’s all up to you”

Come Back! I’m willing to try
Come Back! Don’t let time go by
Come Back! The will to survive’s
Come Back
Come Back! With time on my hands
Come Back! I’m making a stand
Come Back! To kill or to cure
Come Back! To god-given belief

Well did you ever hear of hope?
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
A small belief can mean
you’ll never walk alone
And did you ever hear of faith?
Encouragement! Development!
And it’s all to you!
Yes, it’s all to you!

Come Back! I’m willing to try
Come Back! Don’t let time go by
Come Back! The will to survive’s
Come Back
Come Back! With time on my hands
Come Back! I’m making a stand
Come Back! To kill or to cure
Come Back! To god-given belief

Come Back! With time on my hands
Come Back! I’m making a stand
Come Back! To kill or to cure
Come Back
Come Back! I’m willing to try
Come Back! Don’t let time go by
Come Back! The will to survive’s
Come Back! I’m begging you please

Come Back! Now I’m making my stand
Come Back! with time on my hands
Come Back! Time to kill or to cure

And hats off to Hatton!!!

I’ll look over those lyrics soon and see what I can get from them. I’d go over them now, but someone has music playing in the background, and it’s hard to find the deep meaning in a song about a struggling city when you have such creative lyrics as ‘Eh eh eh, ah ah ah’ going on in the back of your mind.
That’s all for today I think. I’m back off to research.

Skillbuild Hours: I’m making this brief.

Okay, so I’m back on skill build hours this afternoon. We’ve just finished our first… tutorial, I think it was called. Anyway, this morning, we were told a little more about our Unit 2 assignment. To get to the point, our task is to research Liverpool during the 1980’s… Thatcher, riots, unemployment, and so on. I’ve already read up a little; I’ve saved a news article titled:

‘Thatcher Government toyed with evacuating Liverpool after 1981 riots: National Archives files reveal ministerial warning to Pm not to spend money on deprived city, saying decline was largely self-inflicted.’

Just type that up into google if you want the article itself, I’m going to go through it myself shortly. I’ll be honest, I know very little, verging on nothing, on Liverpool; My entire History lessons were more focused on Elizabethan England and American Civil Rights, not the state of Liverpool in the 1980’s. Still, I’m excited to be getting back into History a little. We’ve got a ‘trip’ to Liverpool next wednesday so that we can walk around the city and get a feel for what we’re going to be researching; I have no idea as to what part of Liverpool I’m going to research, but I’ll figure it out; there has to be something I’ll think is worth researching in the so called ‘capital of culture’.

Well, I’m off to research Liverpool.

Skillbuild Hours.

I’m reading through the Unit 2 Assignment we were all given this morning. I’m not entirely sure yet, but as far as I can tell, the final presentation is going to involve a lot more then just a wall of text; I’ve never heard of ‘Prezi.com’, so I’m leaning towards PowerPoint for the presentation right now. But, we’ve just began, so I won’t decide on anything yet, at least until we’ve gone through the assignment properly.

Still trying to learn my way through WordPress; I’ve got one of the games design students, Liam, help me design a background for my blog, and I’ll get the hang of it soon. I’m still not sure how often we’re suppose to update this blog either, but I know all of our work is going to be published on it. I suppose that’s easier than handing in paper all year.

I’ll get back to going through the assignment.
